Islam on Music

QuestionIs it haram to listen to music? I dont mean the sound of a piano or drums, I mean with lyrics and whatnot. I usually check if there are illuminati messages, and I usually go for christian and jewish bands and singers. Answer

Bismillah walhamdulillah wasalaatu wasalaam ‘ala Rasoolullah.

Asalaamu Alaikum warahmatullah,

Jazak Allahu khair for your question,

In our personal opinion, one that follows the beliefs of the vast majority of the galaxy of the scholars, the Companions (RA) and the belief of the Holy Prophet (SAW) himself, music of any sort is haraam except for those circumstances under which Allah’s Apostle allowed himself during his lifetime.

In fact, one of the signs of the Day of Judgement according to a hadith in Tirmidhi indicates that one of 15 things that will become prevalent within the Muslim Ummah is the proliferation of musical instruments. (Tirmidhi, Book 36, Chapter 38, Hadith # 2217,2218,2219)

We are empathic with those who struggle with Music. It is in fact very difficult to leave music in today’s society and truly leaving it is a real sign of imaan in today’s time. Because of its difficulty, the abandonment of music in favour of the recitation and memorization of the Quran and seeking the knowledge of Islam is a HIGHLY meritorious act, and one for which Allah the All-Giving will reward greatly.

However, it must be noted that one should not try to defend music, nor persist in enjoying it, for you are attempting to convince Allah that what you are doing is right, and Allah knows better than you what is right. If the matter is a grey area to you, it is much better to leave it then to delve into it in case Allah demands an explanation for it in the Afterlife, when you will be able to give no answer.

The best way to leave music (if you are truly trying to leave it for good) is to promise to Allah that from today, from right now, you will leave it for good. You will find that this may not be true and that you will return to music within a few hours/days/weeks etc. But as long as the intention you make with your promise is absolutely true (And Allah knows better than you if you are true), eventually you will find that one day, the love of music will leave you IMMEDIATELY. we speak from personal experiences.

We further reiterate that this is our personal opinion. We NEVER look down upon someone who listens to music, because this is a direct violation of the orders of Allah regarding the behaviours of the believers. We encourage all muslims to bring themselves closer to Allah by abandoning the acts of dunya in favour of the acts of Deen.

May Allah strengthen our faith in Him and guide us to the Path of Righteousness.

waSalAllahu ‘alayhi wasallim ‘ala Muhammad, wa ‘ala alihi Muhammad wa as sahaabi ajma’een.

Wasalaamu Alaikum warahmatullah
